SECURITY CONSCIOUS

I am a most security conscious person. Even when Joe was alive I was the one who double checked doors and windows, and still do. These days you can’t be too careful.
The last job of the day is to check all doors and make sure keys are in their rightful places, the last doors to check are at the front of the house.
I have an inner front door and an outer porch door facing the road, both of which need careful checking since they are the main entrances. Outside the bungalow there is a lantern light that goes on at night.

As you can see, the porch is narrow. Not quite big enough to sit in even though it greets the sun and provides plenty of heat. Last night I checked both doors at around 10 o’clock, making sure they were both locked so I could sleep easy. I don’t go to sleep that early but I like to have good long read. By this time, Charlie was out and about in the garden or wherever it is he goes.
I drifted off to sleep at around 11 o’clock and the next thing I heard was what I thought was someone knocking on the inner front door. It was 2 o’clock. Jeez, I was petrified. Then I realised it was the inner porch door that was being knocked. Whoever it was must have broken a window to get in the porch.
I thought it better not to move for a while. If I went to the door I would be seen through the frosted glass. I waited, all was quiet. Still I waited, wondering what to do. Then I heard it, a very loud Meow.
I have never moved so fast in my life….
Charlie must have slipped into the porch when I was locking the front door and there he had to stay, from 10pm until 2am. No bed to lie on, just a cold tiled floor. And I never heard a peep. Daft thing is every night I check that he hasn’t slipped past me…. every night except that one.

  1. How scary! A couple of times I've had the same kind of scare. Makes me want to be armed with a small canon!

Glad it was just a cuddly pet.

  5. Sharon, it is funny - after the event. Hope it doesn't happen again - my heart won't stand it.

  6. Denise, I hope it gave Charlie a fright, enough to put him off slipping into places after me.

  7. I am sure you will double check for Charlie along with the doors from now on...I suspect Charlie learned a lesson as well.

    Scary...but funny.

  8. OMG Valerie, I would have been equally as frightened if this had occured with me. Like you, I check to make sure my apartment door is locked like FIVE times before I get into bed and turn off the light. And I have to laugh because I'm on the 21st floor of a high-rise building with a 24/7 security person at the front door, so it would be almost impossible for someone to sneak past him and come up to my apartment and rob or kill me - HA!

Love the new photograph of Charlie on your blog sidebar. He is such a cute kitty!

Have a fantastic weekend, my friend!

    X to you and Charlie

  9. That's what our cats live for, so way to scare us to death.

  10. Oooh Ron, it must be wonderful living that high up and with a security guard as well. The view must be wonderful. I'm wondering if that was where you lived when you had your cats.

Glad you like the photograph of Charlie. It's about time I took some down but I do like to look at them when I come on the blog. I must do a write-up about Charlie's delight in being brushed etc etc. He only has to see me and he rushes to the place where it happens.

You too have a fab weekend, my friend.

  11. Well my wife has a similar routine, though Miss Lily our German Shepherd provides a good backup along with my retired from hunting 12 gauge shotgun. Though we live in a quiet rural area I still adhere to the Boy Scout Motto..."Be Prepared" :)

  12. I bet Charlie is a little more careful the next time you and he checks all the locks.

  13. TB. I miss my dogs for security purposes. Cats just run away from trouble! Thinks.... Hmmm a shotgun, how about that for a good idea.

  14. Jimmy, I don't think Charlie thinks about being careful, he still comes running when I go to lock the door. I double check now, just in case he pulls a fast one and sneaks in when I'm not looking.

  19. Funny now in retelling this story to share with us, Valerie, but can well imagine the fright it gave you to think that someone was on the porch. Glad it was only Charlie and hopefully he will behave himself in the future.

  20. Beatrice, I keep a very close eye on him now, the door doesn't get shut until I've checked and double checked that he's not in the porch.
