MORE THIS AND THAT

1.      Minding a car for a neighbour. It’s on my drive and I keep getting that ‘I wish’ feeling. The car is for a neighbour’s daughter but his car takes up his only space – hence an appeal for my assistance.

2.      Ever heard the old saying ‘Wind, wind, go away, come on back another day? Well, I would like to insert the word NEVER, since we’re all sick of it.

3.      I like long hair but ladies on cookery programmes should NOT leave their locks flowing all over the food.

4.      Whoops, neighbour’s daughter doesn’t want the car. Neighbour has engaged a family member to take photographs prior to advertising the car for sale.

5.     Recent two day spell of sunshine now replaced by more rain. Oh well, mustn’t grumble!

6.      New neighbours opposite. Today the man of the house was cleaning windows. I called a greeting today but was ignored. Only later did I notice his earphones so presume he was engrossed with music while he worked.

7.      Two phone calls on separate days to tell me my Internet has a problem and I should discuss it by pressing 1. There was a slight blip when I first logged on line but it cleared in a few seconds. I didn’t press 1. Second call, a few days later, gave the same feeling that it was another scam, and the Internet was fine for the rest of the day and beyond. Both callers were women, perhaps they should concentrate on peeling spuds!

8.      How many of you had the job of podding peas when you were young and, if so, did you eat them faster than you could pod them, and did your parents guess what you were up to? Personally, I preferred them raw!

9.      The car mentioned above is still on my drive. The daughter didn’t want it so now it’s awaiting a sale. Wish they would hurry up.

10.   Early birthday present, a lovely table lamp, but no bulb. Couldn’t even guess what bulb required. Helpful neighbours sorted it and shopped for bulb. How’s that for GREAT neighbours?

  1. I loved raw peas. Unfortunately thee is something on the pea that I am allergic to. WHen I ate them I would go on a sneezing fit for an hour or more...non stop sneezing. Did not shell peas that often, so it took a few years to tie the sneezing fit to raw peas (I may be a little slow). Something on the coating of the pea that is boiled off when cooked

    1. OMG Joe, how awful. I seem to remember that there is another coat to the pea, beneath the pod. How awful for you but it's a good job you eventually discovered that it didn't suit you.

  2. Boy, those scams just go around the world don't they? I've never shelled peas but snapped plenty of beans!

    1. They sure do, kden. I pride myself on not being taken in by them but one of these days I might slip up.

  3. I have to admit when I'm outside working in the garden I have headphones on and I'm sure people have said hello and I've ignored them. I find cutting the grass and bore and listening to music makes the time go much quicker.

Yes earlier this week the weather was lovely, now it's windy, wet and cold!

    1. I'm fortunate in having a guy mow the lawn... come to think of it I have never heard him sing :)

  4. Podding peas is wonderful even when they jump on to the floor.

    1. And they certainly do jump! I remember it well.

  5. Well, I certainly hope your neighbors sell that annoying car!
I completely agree with you about women who have wild, flying hair on those cooking shows.
As for rain - we seem to have it almost every day here in Tennessee. It's the wettest place I've ever been.
Those two telephone calls do sound like scams. I'm glad you didn't Press 1.
I've never had the job of podding peas, but I remember when my grandmother used to do it. I think it's a lost art....

    1. I keep looking of the window to check it's still there... it's been three weeks and I expect it to have gone by now. It's not doing me any harm but it still irritates me to see it there.

  6. Valerie, I LOVE peas as well; especially raw. However, I do like a nice hot pea soup now and then. I get a wonderful brand at a grocery store I shop that is not riddled with sodium because canned soups can be very high in salt.

You sound like you have such wonderful neighbors - so helpful, considerate, and thoughtful.

We've had a lot of rain as well. Also, lots of humidity and heat. It's only May, so I have a feeling this summer is going to be excruciatingly hot and very long. YUCK!

Have a lovely Sunday, dear friend!
    X to you and Charlie

    1. Ron, I remember as a child filling my mouth with raw peas and getting into no end of trouble with my mother. Lesson learned early!

  8. I really enjoyed another "this & that" post, Valerie. Hope the neighbor's car has a quick sale. Yes, I have podded peas and also enjoyed eating them raw. Glad you are wise to those phone scams and I agree those women should find a better use for their time. Hope that you will show a photo of your birthday lamp and how nice of your neighbors to help out with the correct bulb. Belated Happy Birthday wishes.

    1. Hi Beatrice. I would love to take a photograph of the lamp and would if I could post it on line. Since the Google upheaval I cannot post any pics. It may be me being ignorant of new ways to do it so in the meantime I am stuck. My stepdaughter is coming soon so I'll ask her if she knows how to do it.

  9. Very kind of you to offer up your driveway for a neighbor Valerie, even if she didn’t want the car. I hope they get rid of it soon! I’ve heard of ‘rain, rain, go away” but wind works just as well and I am very sorry you are having to deal with that. I remember my dad’s fencing being blown down every year in the gale force winds, until he built a good, solid concrete wall 😊. I agree on no. 3, that’s not very good to be picking hairs out of the food. They should set a good example. You can grumble on the rain, I do, though after a deluge we now have sunny weather and it’s warmer again. Hope your new neighbor warms up. Maybe he didn’t hear. Darn those scams. It was my job to pod the peas and always remember sitting in the kitchen popping them into a colander. I loved that job. Yes I ate them too. My mom joined me in eating a few so no problem there. Dad grew them and there were always plenty. I still love peas but they usually come from the freezer these days. Lovely to have an early birthday treat and very nice of your neighbors to get you one. Great neighbors are treasures.

    1. Denise, replies to my 'notes' are great. I shall carry on jotting things down for a blog post. It is easier on the old brain box...lol.

  10. I loved podding peas but didn't like eating them raw. So I was a great little assistant, very productive! Maybe you should start charging rent for the car space. Only joking, of course, but I hope they clear it soon. I am one of those people who likes it windy, although not so keen to be out in it in certain places - woods with lots of old trees, for instance!

    1. The guy who wanted car space also did an arduous job of cutting down the pampas for me, thus my reluctance to please remove.

  11. Happy early birthday. And hurray for your fantastic neighbors. I never wished the wind away but I have wished the rain away many times living in Idaho.
