I never thought.....

I never thought the time would come when the following would (almost) apply!!!!

There is nothing the matter with me.,
I am as healthy as can be.
I have arthritis in both my knees
And when I talk I talk with a wheeze.
My pulse is weak and my blood is thin
But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in.
Old age is golden, I’ve heard it said,
But sometimes I wonder as I get into bed.
With my ears in a drawer, my teeth in a cup,
My eyes on the table until I wake up.
E’re sleep comes to me, I say to myself
Is there anything else I could lay on the shelf?
How do I know that my youth is all spent?
Well, my get up and go has got up and went!
But I don’t really mind when I think, with a grin,
Of all the grand places my ‘getup’ has been.
I get up in the morning and dust off my wits,
Then pick up the paper and read the ‘obits’.
If my name is still missing, I know I’m not dead,
So I have a good breakfast and go back to bed.
The moral is this, as this tale I unfold,
That for you and me who are now growing old
T’is better to say ‘I’m fine’ with a grin
Than to let them all know the real shape you’re in.

  1. I getting there too.

Instead of waking up in the morning raring to go, I'm up several times at night having to go.

  2. "But I don’t really mind when I think, with a grin,
Of all the grand places my ‘getup’ has been."

    Love that part, Valerie!

Wonderful poem! Aging is something, isn't? Even me (at 61) I can see a difference in my body and they way it moves. However, I will say that I still have a lot of energy; more than many younger kids have today.

What's great about you is that you still have an amazing mind. And you keep your brain active through using technology, socializing and your writing. You keep learning, and that's AWESOME! I believe learning keeps us young!

    I admire you, dear friend!

    Have a super Sunday!

  3. Joeh, getting up a lot in the night is par for the course. I stoped counting!

  4. I never tire of this (even used it myself) haha.
I guess we are at our peak. Not getting any better, lol,

  5. Ron, I do try to keep the mind active yet not overdoing it. I have noticed a laziness creeping in when I feel I can't be bothered with things. I really have to pull myself together at those times. Mind you, some things are easier to learn about. If faced with a mathematical problem panic sets in but other times I'm not too bad. Keep soldiering on is my motto... Grins.

  6. SMQ, if you remember I asked you if I could use this on my blog.

  7. It is a wonderful poem Valerie, which just about says it all :)

  8. Hi Denise, yes it does say it all. If I find something was left out I'll let everyone know.. grins.

  9. That is a superb poem. If I were yo I would seriously consider submitting to some sort of writing contest. I really enjoyed it. I lover your wit, the message, your honesty.

    Greetings from London.

  10. Haha, I love it! We are all heading in this direction, well better that than the alternative!

  11. I didn't write this Cuban. However, re your advice about submitting work to contests, I did that many years ago and won a cup which was a proud moment for me. I will post the winning story again, although it has been on line many times before.
