APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE....

(courtesy www.langevin.com)

For want of something better to do I often watch quiz shows on television. It’s one way to keep my mind occupied and alert. I don’t very often get the answers right but at least it exercises the brain and that’s important. I guess that’s why I still blog, albeit now only once a week, since the preparation of a new post might keep me going for a week and that is the right kind of brain exercise. However, my brain has nothing to do with the subject of this post.

Have you ever noticed or indeed do you ever watch quiz programmes where everyone claps themselves if they get something right? Just because the audience applauds is it necessary to do the same? I would be interested to read your replies to the following:

1. Does a correct reply to a question warrant self-applause?

2. Is it a tad conceited to applaud oneself for getting the right answer?

3. Is self-applause sheer joy at having got it right?

I’m old school because I verbally applaud those contestants who smile happily at their success without once lifting hands. I can understand the excitement a young person feels about success but what about the grannies and granddads who enter the same shows. Sarcastic remark coming up …. perhaps they’re there to exercise both brain and brawn!

So tell me, wise bloggers, have the rules changed? Are youngsters now taught that self-congratulation is the way forward, that modesty no longer exists? Sadly, I believe the latter is the case which does nothing more than emphasise the age barrier.

  1. LOL! I have noticed that myself. I think it could be #3 or the fact that the 'Applause' sign is lit and so are their spirits. I would probably be like a deer in the headlights if I was on one of those shows.

  2. Valerie, I've noticed the same thing, not only on quiz shows, but also on talk shows where a guest or celebrity occasionally claps for themselves in response to the audience clapping at something they might have said or done. I think it's a #3 response because it never seems like a boastful clap, more so a clap that they're happy they got it right or they're clapping at the audience who is clapping for them; almost like a nervous clap.

And speaking of quiz shows, I used to be a HUGE fan of them. I had a friend in Florida who, together, we would sit and watch them weekly. Like you, I would hardly ever get the answers right, but I had fun trying to guess!

Hope you're having a lovely Sunday, my friend!

  3. I'm with you, "Old School" act like you expect success and don't rub it in to the other guy. In football, the greatest running back there ever was or ever will be, Jim Brown, never celebrated a TD. He simply found the ref and handed him the ball. Today they dance, prance and mug for the camera, showmanship I guess. I blame Mohamed Ali and his "I am the greatest stick" of course he was the greatest so...

Anyway, I am on your side, though I have to confess when I get the right answer while watching these shows I have been known to raise a fist and yell "YES!"

  4. I like quiz shows too but not a fan of all the loud applause and shouting and whistling.

  5. SJ - I think I would be like that deer! I noticed on frequent television reports that Mr Trump does a lot of clapping, he joins in when his supporters applaud him.

  6. Ron,I think I'll watch carefully in future to see if I change my mind. Perhaps I've reached the old and miserable stagee... whaaaa!

  7. I think game shows should be like graduations; 'hold all applause till the end'. They could get a lot more show in :) I play games on my kindle to keep my mind going. But I admit when I beat someone playing Words With Friends, I do a fist pump.

  8. Jeopardy is the only one I watch. I mostly pay attention to see if the other players applaud whenever someone gets the Daily Double. I think the non-applauders are rude. I've never noticed anyone applauding themselves.

  9. Danielle, self applause happens a lot here - perhaps things are different where you live.

  10. kden, to my mind fist pumps are more acceptable than clapping. It's more expressive, for one thing.

  11. I wonder how much of it is 'coaching' by the director of the show? I don't watch a lot of quiz shows lately so I can't judge very well, maybe I should to get the old brain box going :)

  12. I agree with Denise. Most of those programs and their contestants seem contrived. Although I must admit, I do enjoy Jeopardy. Especially when I get the final answer and none of the contestants get it right.😂😂

  13. Hi Geraldine. One think I hate is canned laughter, it is so irritating. I imagine someone there pressing the laughter switch and desperately want to strangle him.

  14. I haven't watched a quiz or game show in a long time, but I do remember not liking the canned laughter or applause break. I also modesty has gone out the window so that probably doesn't help either. Take care Val.
