Fine Art

Most of the pictures on my walls are hand done tapestry, decoupage, or pressed flowers, but none will be listed in the hall of fame. However, I do have two pieces that I'm proud of, both limited editions, both bought at auction on a cruise liner.

The first is called Nijinsky by Michael Gorban, born in the former Soviet Union.
This is what he says about painting:

'Painting is a sensual experience ... I will not sign my name until I am completely satisfied. Concerning the subtle difference between an artist and a painter, he adds, 'An artist can hear what the painting wants; a painter cannot. I never painted under duress or according to order. My success comes from people feeling the same satisfaction that I myself felt upon completing the painting.'

(A bit like my writing, I can't write to order or under duress.)

My view of the painting is that it is an impression, as if I've been in a room and come out with subtle memories of what I saw in there ... notice the variety of themes, flowers, table lamp, musical instruments, ballet dancers, sheet music, quill pen and ink, and a handwritten note.

The second painting is by Gary Benfield, an artist born in my home town. It is called Essence and is completely different to the Gorban. I looked at it for several days and felt such a great attachment for it that it became a must-have; not quite at any price, but almost.

Gary paints with spontaneity and passion and keeps only the images he feels are perfected in their conception, rather than overwork those he feels are not.

His images represent a sensual world, a place influenced by mythology and the natural world. Objects and figures intertwine fusing line and colour. We are drawn into an intimate world where sensuality and delight in life's forms are mixed in fantasy.

My work is attractive enough in its own way but oh how I wish I could draw and paint.

The one of Nijinsky really spoke to me. I watched a documentary on his life a few years ago and really enjoyed it. What a fascinating and talented man he was!

I'm creative in some ways, definitely not with either drawing or painting though.
