Boring TV or cookery - take your pick

TV … what a bore lately. And what about all the shouting and yelling that goes on? Women especially. Even ordinary talk is loud and often unfathomable. I give each episode a chance but once the shouting starts I switch channels. Am I missing something? Is real life like this?

Joe and I sometimes fell out but I don’t recall either of us shouting, even though Joe was slightly deaf. On TV, though, ordinary talk has turned into loud and angry exchanges. It seems that every TV family is at war with the entire cast.

TV is no longer entertaining. Cookery programmes seem to be all the rage, every channel filming a well-known chef and his way of preparing meals. I long to go on TV and talk about the ready meals I get from various outlets, all full of nourishment and vitamins. Ok, I know I could cook my own but when a body is virtually housebound it pays to get someone else to do the cooking. All I have to do is freeze the meals, defreeze, heat in oven or microwave and VOILA, done and dusted, as they say.

Washing up consists of a single plate three times a day – or less – and a few mugs from which I drink peppermint tea or lemon and ginger. And people told me I was foolish to stop using a dishwasher.

  1. Very few regular TV shows can I watch, but I do like reality and quiz shows...yes I know they are garbage, I've never claimed to have any class. "The Good Doctor" is an entertaining show. And "Mom" is one of the funniest comedy's around.

    1. Hi Joeh, like you I watch quiz shows. They make a nice change from murders and stupidity.

  2. We watch mostly sitcoms and dramas. I think there are way too many cop type shows, all having the same plot and predictable outcome. I'm glad we have the variety of TV, Netflix, and Prime to get a little bit of everything.

    1. Hi kden, I watch some sitcoms but hate it when they start shouting.... at least they do on the ones I see. I recently gave up Sky TV so my complaints are now fewer but unfortunately still there.

  3. Valerie, I couldn't agree with you more! It's the same here in the US. Which is why I don't own a TV or have any desire to watch what's on our networks. The big thing here are "Reality TV Shows" which I are not even reality. They're all just made to look like reality, but in reality they are all simply FAKE situations with bad actors. Such a bore!

We have a lot of cookery programs as well.

I love your idea of ready meals because in as much as I love food, I don't enjoy cooking. We have many ready meal companies here in the States that will deliver to your home. I think it's a great idea. I know many people (young and old) who use their services because they find it so much easier (and faster) to just order online and have their food delivered.

I don't have a dishwasher. And even when I did have one, I didn't use it. It's a waste of electricity and water.

Have a super Sunday, my friend!

    P.S. LOVE the cartoon. LOL!

    1. I often wonder how many people watch cookery shows.

It is interesting to know that meals can be delivered in the States. Thinking about it, the idea was probably born in the States. We do seem to copy other countries in many things.

I am pleased to hear that you and others don't wash dishes in a machine. Some folk thought I was stupid not to. Oh well, each to his own.

Today is Mothering Sunday so I'm going to take things easy. Call it my day off!

  4. I agree with you about television Valerie. Saturday nights in particular are often very bad. I think the programme schedulers people think everyone is in the pub and they can put on anything because nobody is watching. We turned our television off last night because there was nothing worth watching.

    1. You are right about Saturday nights! Like you, I switch off and put the radio on, at least the music on there is good. I am thankful I don't have to pay for a licence anymore.

  5. My viewing consists of shows on the public broadcasting network (PBS) and shows available on streaming networks, primarily Netflix and Acorn TV which has so many British dramas. We have a digital antenna and can receive some over-the-air broadcast channels, but like you I find them not worth watching. That said, we do watch a couple cooking shows on the PBS channel. We have a built-in dishwasher in our apartment, but only run it about once a week.

    1. Oh WOW, I can't see any of those programmes even on the last TV, which was SKY based, I couldn't. The set I have now was deliberately chosen to avoid a lot of the rubbishy stuff. Too much choice isn't good for me but Hubby loved it:)

  6. I'm with you Valerie, I don't like shows that start ranting and screaming. Reality shows aren't my cup of tea either. I haven't watched a cooking show in a long time though I used to enjoy them, don't know why I stopped. I have Netflix and Acorn and basically watch those now when I feel like settling down in the evenings. I like being able to pick and choose when I do switch on the TV. Ready made meals are great. I still enjoy following a recipe when the mood hits me but today we basically had a rotisserie chicken from the store, a smallish jacket potato, and opened up a can of beans as I was brought up just having a jacket potato with baked beans and that was our meal. Still one of my favorite meals :) Today we had sliced tomatoes on the side. Interesting post as always, enjoyed very much, thank you :)

    1. Hi Denise, it is good to know that others feel the same way about TV as I do. It's hard to avoid cookery shows here, especially on a Sunday when they are extra long and extra tedious.

  7. So called "Reality TV" is a bad joke in this country. Nothing real about it. As to the rest of TV well my wife and I preferred to sit on our from porch in the summer and watch the goats and their kids across the road. Much more entertaining...:)

    1. Watching goats would be my preferred entertainment. As for TV, I wonder what would happen if we got rid of our TV sets!!

  8. I think you should try some documentaries. TV is kind of hot garbage right now and a lot of yelling like you mentioned. Take care, Val.

  9. Heehee Matt, I resorted to reading a book instead of watching TV. How's that for a brave girl??

  11. I don't watch TV at all these days except for Dragon's Den and things like Victoria. Not sure why I pay a TV licence but with any luck that will be free for me in October when I reach three quarters of a century . . . :)

  12. You will never catch me up, Eddie...lol.
I think I'm starting down the same path. I have noticed lately that even though the TV is on I am not watching it or even listening to it. Fortunately I am of an age when I don't have to pay for or acquire a TV licence.
