TALKING OF GHOSTS....

Some time ago (around 2012) my blogging friend, Ron,  posted an item about ghosts and  asking if anyone had a similar experience.
Well, I once had a ghost in my house, and the following is a brief (!) description.

MY TRUE GHOST STORY IN BRIEF

Time: during young son's infancy
Location: home, a ground floor flat

First sign:

A present given to Jon: a cone thingy that shot table tennis balls into the air. Ball falls to the lounge floor and rolls under a chair. Chair’s location was in front of a small radiator affixed to the wall, the other side of which (in kitchen) was the airing cupboard. Immediately moved the chair to retrieve the ball, but it wasn’t there. Searched high and low but couldn’t find it. It’s not often you can say you actually saw something disappear, but I actually did watch it go.

Other signs:

Small items of clothing disappearing from airing cupboard in the kitchen, adjacent to the radiator on the other side of the wall where the ball disappeared; small toys disappearing from all over the flat and an unexplained fruity smell in the kitchen.

All the above occurred over a seven year period, until Jon went to boarding school. Only during holidays did things go wrong!

Second sign:

A Christmas gift bottle of sherry from workmates was placed on stereo near television. Curtains were drawn, and the room lit by a single table lamp. Jon and I were sitting on the settee watching a programme when suddenly a shaft of light circled the bottle before hovering over the ceiling then swooping out of the room via the open door. I thought maybe Jon was playing silly whatsits with his watch but he was sprawled out and engrossed in the telly. He wasn’t wearing his watch. That was the only really scary occurrence. I went into the garden to check if someone was there (not afraid of the dark in those days) but there was no-one. There wasn’t even a chink in the curtain so if there had been someone no sighting could be had of the room.

Advice:

Several years later, a spiritualist husband of a work colleague sent a message to say I should call the ghost’s bluff and ask for the return of the table tennis ball, which was the first thing to go missing. I thought it worth a try so I chose a time when I was alone. Ooooh I did feel a fool talking to thin air and asking for my ball back. Well I did it and there the matter ended. Nothing else disappeared from that moment on.

Conclusion, months later:

Talking to neighbour, Joan, she expressed surprise that Jon wasn’t at school. When I told her he was, she said she’d heard him in the garden quite late at night when she herself was out calling for her cat to come in. ‘Come on, Blackie’ she called, and a child’s voice said ‘He’s here, Mrs M.’ Interesting! The only child in the area was mine and he was definitely at school. All the residents were elderly and they never had night time visitors. I told Joan she must have been mistaken, but she was adamant she’d heard a kid out there. I didn’t think about the conversation until later in the day when I went into my garden and found a table tennis ball on the back step.

History of House:

We later discovered that years before I moved into the house a little girl died there. I cannot remember clearly but I think she died in an accident. Theory goes that her restless spirit returned to play and my son was the first child to inhabit the property after her death.

  1. Oh that is creepy. I do think ghosts exist and bad spirits, but I don't really understand how that ties in with the afterlife.

    1. I don't know either, Joe, but it intrigues me. I used to ponder on it for hours but don't bother now.

    1. It was indeed weird but real enough for me to remember all the details.

  3. That is fascinating and incredibly frightening - - the vanishing tennis ball (and other items), the circle of light by the bottle of sherry, the mysterious smells, etc. And the child's voice in the garden. It's incredible that the table tennis ball showed up on the steps!
It's creepy to know that a child died in the house - I wonder what was the cause of death?

I definitely believe in ghosts and evil spirits, because I've experienced numerous ghosts-related things over the years - in various places and different times in my life.
    Thanks for sharing this, Valerie.

    1. Jon, I think the child, a girl, who died in that house was in a road accident and died shortly afterwards. The neighbours couldn't wait to tell me what had happened even though I did not know the child. The light moving slowly round the bottle was the most eerie. It was still there when I switched off the TV so I knew it came from some other source, and that is why I shot outside to see who was playing tricks!

  4. Valerie, I TOTALLY forgot about that post I shared on ghosts. I actually had to go back into my archives to find it. I posted it so long ago, I'm so impressed that you remembered. And you were right, I posted it right around 2012 (2011). Great memory!

OMG, you experience with ghosts gave me CHILLS. And I just about died when you shared about the history of the house!!!!!

    CHILLS!!!!

Thanks so much for sharing this story, my friend. REALLY enjoyed it!

And I'm surprised you haven't written one of your fabulous stories using this as the storyline. It would make for an awesome story!

  5. Creepy and amazing. I have had too many experiences with ghosts and all were mild, harmless. Finding out the history must help somewhat. Poor little girl.

    1. I wish I could go back and do research but it is too long ago. My son is 56 now so I imagine the people I wrote about will be long gone.

  6. I have seen ghosts and expeienced strange noises like hob nailed boots walking down the path, creaking gates that are no longer there, pipe tobacco..? The weirdest one was the old hooded lady with her nose pressed to the kitchen window. Yes I know ghosts are real. Good post!

  7. Oooh, did you acknowledge the old hooded lady? I was told always to talk to ghosts and on occasions I did but there was no response....grins.

  8. I looked up old family death certificates and my great grandmother died on the day of the sighting? Could it have been her? Never seen it since.

    1. How interesting. It has to be more than coincidence, Dave. I guess that your grandmother wanted one last look before lying in peace.

  9. Hi, Valerie!
Wow, what interesting events! I do believe that that these things happen quite often. Stuck energy or something, still holding a connection to the earth?

  10. Oooh Mary, I like that expression 'stuck energy'. Hope I can have some when its my turn haha.

  11. Our apt is in an old mill and my husband, and others, swear that it’s haunted by ghosts of former mill workers. Grenville tells folks that we have a ghost named Abby who will shut the bathroom door. He also feels that our former home in VA was haunted by a former owner. While I don’t dis-believe ghost sightings or that folks have seen them and also strange happenings, I have never had such experiences.

    1. I was told that ghosts only visit receptive minds. although I'm not entirely sure what that means. Receptive to what? The guy who told me couldn't answer that!
