Irritations!

Bloglovin’ is on a new kick... only showing two blogs at a time.... to read more I have to keep reloading. How painful is that? I think I’ll have to check with Feedly again. However, that’s not the main theme of this post.

The question of making blogs private was recently raised by a blogging friend. Should she or shouldn’t she was her dilemma. Turning the question round, though, it means all her friends would have to log in before they could read her blog. Does anyone who follows private blogs find this an inconvenience? I ask because I was also thinking of making mine private to get away from some of the (sometimes) distasteful remarks I read before allowing comments to be published. I thank the powers-that-be for the ‘email notification’ facility but equally I would rather not have to read the rubbish that ends up in my email box. I would be grateful for your thoughts on this subject.

Why do some some people feel the need to aggravate us? Is it for kicks to brighten an otherwise dull life? There surely can’t be any gain! Whilst typing the above words I was reminded of an incident that occurred the other day. I had just left the Townswomen’s Guild building and was heading towards the car park which is near a school. It was that time of day when pupils were leaving the school in droves. As I neared the car park I encountered a small group (around six) of sixth form lads, one of whom made a ‘fancy you’ remark as he passed. I ignored it but was shocked to hear his next remark. He had waited until there was a good space between us before saying, in a loud voice, something which shocked me to the core. The diatribe included the word fornication which he apparently felt in need of. I cut him down to size with a cutting remark that emphasised his immaturity and he was laughed at by the other lads. What possible satisfaction could he have for uttering such an improper suggestion to someone decades older than himself?

  2. Valerie ~ just disrespect on that young lad's part and it was good you were not too scared to check him. It takes a village to raise a child ~ and who knows that May have a lasting effect on him.

As for private blogs ~ I am all for it and have considered it myself. I particularly don't like lurkers ~ people who read and don't engage with the conversation.

I have only had one person to leave inappropriate comments on my blog. And I agree ~ I don't like reading them when moderating.

  3. Carol, it was broad daylight... had it been dark I might have had second thoughts. About the blog, I have had lurkers who talk in real life about what they've read. That really annoys me.

So, you are have a new blog and I didn't know. Shame on me. I just had a peak and left a comment. It's good to see you again.

  4. I get upset when I hear of this kind of behavior and then I will meet a nice young person or a nice older person, and it makes my heart sing. Fortunately I haven't come across anything like you had to put up with in many, many, many years. I have had my fair share of being called nasty names, fortunately not for a long time, but those school kids can make life hell. It's the bullying that can be a real problem everywhere. It ain't a nice way to behave. I'm also sorry you've had problems with your comment section. I would have no problems if you wanted to go private.

  5. I think you handled that young fellow properly. As for private blogging, I have never tried it, but it may discourage a lot of people from visiting if they have to sign in....but don't really know. Just sayin'. lol

  6. It all boils down to good parenting. You can tell the kids who were raised with a healthy appreciation of consequences if they acted out of turn. But then again, kids will be kids, and each one has to experiment to find his or her voice in the world. Here's hoping that the kid you cut to size eventually learns the error of his ways and straightens up before somebody does him bodily harm...

  7. I love the pictures of your garden. We have toyed with the idea of getting someone to do the mowing this year. I would be happy to pay! I guess I have been lucky not to have bad comments on the blog and I would sign in to read yours, but if all my meme folks did this I probably wouldn't be as likely to comment. I don't mind the lurkers who don't comment, it is just not that important to me.

  8. I don't like the idea in most case causes it's one more unnecessary and time consuming complication, of which there are too many already. Though I've never had any ugly comments and very little spam. I try in my blog to bring a little sunshine into anyone in the public who might enjoy. That doesn't include Mr. Anonymous though....:)_

  9. Attention. That was what first came to mind when I read the story about the sixth-formers. They crave that attention, that being-the-centre-of-the-universe. You did the right thing. Bring 'em down a peg or two.

    Greetings from London.

  10. I am so sorry you've been the victim of these things, Valerie. I get angry about bullying. I have no tolerance for any of it. And I would have had words with the boy, too. A bit of embarassment in front of his buddies would work. I've asked them for the offenders name before and the address of the home....and gotten it. You can be sure I visited with the parent. Boy it gets me going....
And the other issue...more bullying and equally uncool. I'll support you no matter the choice. You don't need that garbage.

  11. Way to set that young man in his place, Val. Taught him a valuable lesson. People will continue to make ugly comments online until they are held accountable like you did with that kid. It's easy to be a tough guy from the comfort of your couch on the computer. Hope all is well. Take care.
