DRIVERS NIGHTMARE

Drivers nightmare

(written a few years ago)

Green light says Go
Indicate, turn right
Foot down, hurrying
Home for the night
Ball speeds towards him
Just a game
Football crazy, future fame?
Parents’ tears shed
On fragrant flowers
He wouldn’t be told
That son of ours
Who can they blame?
Who was remiss?
There should be a law
To stop upsets

  1. Oh, this is a good one, Valerie. Yes, a drivers nightmare indeed. And a parents nightmare as well.

I always forget that what Americans call soccer is called football elsewhere in the world.

Have a terrific day, my friend!

    1. I wrote this about a young boy who lived four doors away and was killed. I didn't wrote the poem until many years later though.

  2. This is indeed a nightmare - for the driver and the parents. Carelessness is the lethal culprit. The greatest tragedy is that it could have been avoided....

Thanks for sharing this poem for thought.

    1. Yes, Jon, if only he and many other boys would listen to their parents.

  4. At first I thought this might be a lighthearted poem because of the illustration, alas it was very far from being so.

    1. I wanted to illustrate that even happy boys can suffer early death. If only they would listen to parental advice.

  5. Very poignant Valerie. Always a scary thought when you are driving. So many have been lost to these kinds of accidents. Families lives changed forever. Very sad!

    1. It happens so quickly. If only the youngsters would listen and act upon parental advice.
