NOW ON KINDLE

·      Once upon a time ... a tale of two rescued dogs (a seven   part series of short tales)

·      Feline Capers (eight short tales about things Lee gets up to)

Yes, folks, I finally got around to putting the stories on Kindle although it took a bit of pressure from Faye before I did so. It wasn't easy finding the best way forward, I went through quite a few on-line publishers before choosing Amazon as a better bet for what I wanted. I say ‘what I wanted’ but in reality I didn't know what I wanted.

The main question in my mind was: did I want a paper copy or digital?

Serious thought had to go into that one. It seemed to me that because I have so much of my work printed out and stored in folders on the bookshelf I would be hard pressed to know where to start. Then I thought about the doggy tales and decided they were small enough to experiment with.

Did I want the hassle of paying for a fully fledged book and then having to sell my own to justify the cost or did I want to see/read my work on an ebook? Well, laziness and age played a part, plus a touch of uncertainty about my writing’s appeal. I mean, if I published a book and nobody wanted to buy, it would be a waste of time and money. But if I went down the eBook route it would cost me nothing and I might even get a few pennies in royalty.

So I went down the Amazon route and ended up on Kindle. The dog tales were first to go there. It took me a while to understand what was required of me, i.e. which boxes to tick, but there were explanations attached to each question so I was able to muddle through. I got a few things wrong simply because I tend to flick through instructions without digesting the important bits. But apart from a minor hiccup the experiment proved worthwhile.

Seeing the tales on Kindle was a big kick to the ego, so I quickly followed up with Feline Capers. Now both can be read on the iPad and iPhone.

I tried to put a link on the blog that would take people straight to the Amazon spot but the US didn’t recognise a UK request so I ended up putting notices in the sidebar advising that people search on either US or UK for the author’s name. Maybe one day, when I’m famous, it will get easier... grins.

So where do I go from here? Should I publish the novels or should I stick with the short stories? Maybe a compilation of stories ... or maybe leave it at that and not bother. What do you think?

  1. Congratulations on being published! I know what a thrill that must be because I got the same thrill when I published my father's book, KIT his mother's biography, on LULU for him. I think I was more thrilled than my Dad! LOL

  4. Crikey, very well done! You are way in advance of me technically, other people have to carry me. Thanks very much for the plug. I'm struggling with both twitter and marketing in general. We could do with some way where we all 'advertise' for each other. Any ideas. Good luck, I will be back.

Brian, you made me smile.... thanks.

Hi Ken, keep plugging your book. You're idea of advertising each other is good. I will think about that one.

  7. *thunderous applause*

I am sooooooooooo proud of you, Valerie, for taking the plunge and publishing your stories on Kindle!

    You GO, girl!!!!!

I know how challenging it can be to understand the workings/instructions of setting up something online because I just set up a Zazzle Store where I can sell my photographs on cards, calendars, posters, etc., and I'm having a very difficult time understanding it all.

"But if I went down the eBook route it would cost me nothing and I might even get a few pennies in royalty."

I TOTALLY think you made the right choice because the way technology is going, ebooks are the way to go!

"So where do I go from here?"

See how this goes with your short tales and then take it from there. But I definitely think your novels are worth publishing as well!

Have a great weekend, dear lady. And again...congratulations!

  9. Good afternoon, Ron. Ooooh Zazzle Store, that sounds interesting. Hope you will tell us more about it. Thank you so much for your encouragement, you're a gem. Unfortunately I don't think my stuff will sell, I mean ... who knows about it apart from my blogging friends? Fortunately I am under no illusion about it.
