My Hobby

The leaves shown here are roughly 25 years old. They were preserved in glycerine. The procedure removed the green and gave the leaves a lovely natural colour. Periodically I rearrange them with Honesty seed pads and sprigs of wheat or corn. This year I've peeled a lot of Honesty and scattered hundreds of seeds, some for the birds and some to grow on next year in the rough patch.

This is a small arrangement of Honesty seed pads and dried teasels. I quite like the autumn look.

  3. I can remember seeing in a craft book years ago, how to preserve with glycerine, but have forgotten about it. Maybe you can do a tutorial and we can all have a go Val?

  5. Kath, all you need is some glycerine. Choose leaves with a fairly woody stem and stand them in the solution until they change. Eke out the glycerine with hot water but that's not necessary.

  6. Valerie, I am soooooooooo impressed!!!

These are stunning! I especially love the natural color. And how amazing that the leaves in the first shot are 25 years old?!?!

Very talented you are, dear lady!

Hope you're having a sensational Saturday!

  7. Ron, we've had two houses since I preserved those leaves, so it could be more than 25 years. Or less, of course, but not much less. I had a beamed kitchen with flowers hanging to dry from the central beam. I was well into preservation in those days. There's no talent involved... just a few hooks and a bottle of glycerine.

  8. I had a friend who made the most amazing wall decorations from dried leaves, fruit, seed pods etc. She made me a beautiful one as a gift when we moved back to England, but unfortunately it was badly damaged during a later move. I love anything made of things that are found in nature.

  10. Pearl, they're very simple, not really arranged in the real sense of the word.

    John, thank you.
