MORE THIS AND THAT....

Well, hello. How are you doing? I thought it was about time I put pen to paper, er… sorry, I mean fingers to keys. There is nothing worth talking about, really, but as I need to keep in touch with blogging pals I will summon the brain and have a go.

Not been doing much, but am still getting check-up phone calls from my son. From never hearing from him or meeting him we have suddenly become close, by phone … thanks to the weird and wonderful world we now live in. See, there is a good side to everything.

Food shops are closed here and supermarkets are choosy about which customers to allow in their stores. But I will not be beaten. Had a look at Amazon and was pleasantly surprised by what they had to offer. My order was quickly placed and to hell with the higher cost. The honey was lovely and was delivered in double quick time, AND I managed to get those lady things that ladies wear on a monthly basis. You can't buy those at the greengrocers. Compared to the behaviour of shopkeepers who allowed themselves to run out of produce, I was on a good thing. What I don’t understand is how one company can please a nation and others can’t.

Must mention one purchase and that is the box of biscuits sent via Amazon which would have fed the five thousand. A slight exaggeration but not far off. The box was HUGE and wouldn’t fit into any cupboard. I had to split the contents and put them into umpteen different containers… jugs, boxes, jars, and bags. It will take a long, long time to get through them all, but at least I won’t need to buy biscuits in the foreseeable future. Then, today, the same thing happened with cat food. What I thought was a reasonable fortnight’s supply turned out to be enough to feed another five thousand. I have no worries now. Even the bank was happy with me.

This laptop has a mind of its own, twice now I have had to retype stuff because it decided to play games and type different things. Now I have forgotten what I was talking about, but it might have been the extra cake my kind neighbour brought me when she did my bit of shopping. I did cough up the money, wouldn’t dream of letting her pay for goods as well as fetch them.  I’m not daft, I know that if I treat her well she might do my shopping again.

Some may remember me mentioning .............. forget that. Another man rang the bell to tell me he had left a parcel and it knocked what I was going to say right out of the window. I must seal that damn window, it keeps letting me down. Oooh, I remember now. You may recall me telling you about a young lad who came to do odd jobs. He stopped coming when he left school and got a job. Well, he sent a text message to see if I was okay. I reassured him that I was. Then, later on the same day, he sent another text to say his mother had offered to do some shopping for me. How nice is that?

Oh well, that’s enough for one day. Catch you all again soon. In the meantime, behave yourselves.

  2. That is nice that people are reaching out to you! I hope more do so down the line. Its nice to think people are thinking of you and trying to help as they can! We ordered one time a spice from Amazon that we couldn't find at the store. It too came in a big quantity; I don't think we'll have to buy that for years to come!

    1. Agree with you about the food situation. I have noticed my appetite has waned, perhaps it is getting ready for longer gaps in the feeding stakes.

  4. Valerie, so happy to read that your son is calling you daily to check up. I'm sure that makes you feel not only very much at-ease, but that he's caring and concerned as well.

"... and supermarkets are choosy about which customers to allow in their stores."

Really? I have to say that I find that odd, why would they pick and choose customers? Here, our supermarkets allow everyone in. And they even have it set up so that senior citizens can shop an hour before the store opens so that they can feel safe in a less-crowded store. All the markets here also hand out hand sanitizer upon entering so that your hands are germ-free. I have to say that I've been very impressed by how our supermarkets are handling this coronavirus, by making sure that they open extra early so that people have more time to shop; they are always well-stocked; and always very conscious about sanitization. In fact, one day while shopping I asked to speak to the manager so that I could thank her for all her hard work and dedication to make shopping during this troubling time an enjoyable and safe experience.

Anyway, I'm glad that you can order from Amazon and have your groceries delivered. And so fast. That's awesome!

And it's so nice to read that your neighbor AND the young man's mother are offering to do shopping for you. Isn't it such a wonderful feeling to know that people are there for you?

I've witnessed so many of acts of kindness these past three weeks, with people reaching out to help one another.

Have a great rest of your week, my friend!

  5. I'm glad Amazon shopping is working well for you. And total random acts of kindness make these days so much sweeter. Or maybe it's the biscuits :)

    1. Sometimes a sense of humour is the best way to deal with things such as those we face right now. I mean, crying gets me nowhere so I might as well laugh. Hope you and the family are surviving okay.

  7. Good for you, always happy to read your blog :) Keeping more in contact with your son is a wonderful benefit and a light in this global storm :) Happy to hear that Amazon is coming through for you. I never thought of having my food delivered before now but we will be getting our second delivery tomorrow night, the first was a couple of weeks ago. Considering the alternative I feel the same way as you do. Never ending thanks to all those dear folks who are keeping us all going. Your box of biscuits sounds lovely and will stand you in good stead :) There are three places I have recently ordered from, all British and both have what I call my nostalgia goodies. Black pudding and English-style bacon from a place in North Carolina, Biscuits and chocolates from a place in Georgia, and one more local place here that I can order freshly made Cornish Pasties. I don’t usually order from the first two except at Christmas but needs must. The place we go to for our pasties is on the way to one of our favorite gardens. I have ordered to packages of pasties, one for us and I sent one to my son and daughter-in-law. How kind of your neighbor to do the shopping for you, plus extra cake. You can never go wrong by treating people nicely. Good karma :) I can forget things like that, something comes up and out the brainbox it goes. How nice of the young lad to send a text asking how you are, and his mother who offered to do the shopping. There are many good people out there. Does the heart good.

Yes, I am behaving myself ;)

  8. Valerie, hope that your back ache has eased as you hadn't mentioned it in this post. It's always great to find a new post from you and even better to read that people have been reaching out with calls and offers to help shop, etc. There is much good in the world and sometimes it sadly takes a really bad situation that everyone shares in to have it shine through. Thanks for sharing such wonderful good humor and glad you and Charlie are doing well and well stocked apparently.

  9. I have also resorted to getting some things off of Amazon during this time. I miss being able to see exactly what I'm getting before I buy it, but I am really thankful for online options during this time.

    Blessings~

    1. I agree about not being able to see what we buy from Amazon but they have so many outlets it would be difficult to pin one down. Thank you for your comment, it is lovely to see new people.

  10. Shops here aren't choosy about WHO they let in, but they are limiting the number of customers. There is a line leading to the store with green dots saying "stand here" for the social distancing part, then they allow so many customers in the store, and when some come out, a few more go in. I usually get there late mornings when the rush is over, so I get straight in without waiting, then there are similar dots at the checkout lines, so no one is breathing on anyone else.
I used to love Amazon, then the delivery charge to Australia tripled and quadrupled so I don't even go to the website anymore, let alone buy anything.
