While My Sister Sleeps

Barbara Delinsky wrote While My Sister Sleeps in 2009 and it has taken until now for me to get round to reading it. I am so pleased I didn’t miss it altogether.

This author has taught me a lot about writing and there is still a lot to learn. Barbara has a special talent for making the reader feel part of the story, giving little touches to bring the scene alive. She doesn’t just use words, she uses feelings. Emotional scenes move the heart. She can arouse compassion or stimulate joy to such an extent that I weep real tears or smile with genuine happiness.

The subject of While My Sister Sleeps is powerful. The following introduction will explain….

‘World Class runner Robin Snow is at the top of her game when her heart inexplicably fails and she sinks into a coma.

As hope for her recovery fades her family is left with a terrible choice, one that no-one should ever have to make. Faced with a heartbreaking decision it is the quiet, younger sister Molly who finds herself stepping out of Robin’s shadow and into the heart of the family’s terrible dilemma.

Will they have the courage to do what is right?’

The story is poignant and tear-jerking. Only this morning I had to stop reading because my eyes were too watery to see the words. That’s the power of Barbara Delinsky. I don’t read her books, I live them.

  1. I have not read that book. It sounds very sad, but well-written to evoke such involvement and emotion.

  5. Thank you so much for sharing this excellent review, Valerie!

And it's ironic that you mentioned this book because I somehow remember seeing the book cover in Barnes & Noble at one time.

    Sounds like an AWESOME story!

YOU do the same thing with your stories! You have such a gift for writing little touches; bring the scene alive. Your visual descriptions are always so clear, making me feel like I'm there.

Have a wonderful weekend, dear lady!

  7. Thank you, Ron. I'm honoured that you think my writing is visual... but Barbara's is much better. I pick up tips whenever I read her work which has to be good, don't you think?
